Interested in finding out how Southern Water have been using behavioural science to take a whole-life approach to responsible water production and customer consumption?

Join Spring and Southern Water on Tuesday, 4 June 2024 to learn more about Southern Water’s water efficiency programme, ‘Target 100’, which has an ambitious goal of encouraging customers to reduce their water use to just 100 litres per person per day.

To meet this target, Southern Water needed their customers to make impactful and sustainable changes to how they view and use water, while having a limited affect on their everyday experience and enjoyment.

Recognising the effort involved to enable behaviour change at this scale, the innovation team redefined the approach. This involved bringing new skills, partnerships and perspectives to the challenge. Following an initial design sprint, the team have been building an action-based approach to develop more customer-centric water saving solutions and provide robust measurement of their impact.

In this Spring Innovation showcase, the Southern Water innovation team will present their unique action-based approach to learning what really works to change customer behaviour. The team will also cover how they have measured the impact and the new partnerships they’ve created to deliver unique solutions to the challenge.

Attendees can expect to learn more about;

  • Behavioural Science: To develop their understanding of human behaviour and how to design solutions that enable measurable water reduction
  • Ethnography: How to use behavioural insight to identify opportunities and move to action quickly
  • Test & learn: How to test new ideas to understand what works for consumption reduction and pivoting when we learn what doesn’t work
  • Disaggregation of behaviours: Attributing the impact of specific behaviours via new measurement approaches
  • Holistic strategy: seeing the bigger picture to do more with less
