Want to find out how Northumbrian Water are using organics technology to recover ammonia from their wastewater treatment process?

Join Spring and Northumbrian Water, on Tuesday, 23 April 2024 to find out how Northumbrian Water have worked alongside Organics to recover up to 4,400 tonnes of high strength ammonia from their treatment processes.

As part of the Water Breakthrough Challenge 2021, Northumbrian Water have been looking into how they can assist UK and Ireland water companies to meet their future total nitrogen consents, minimise nitrous oxide emissions and reduce power consumption (during secondary treatment). They’re also using Organics technology to recover ammonia, including testing a range of valuable products including aqueous ammonia and hydrogen.

During the first stages of the project, they found innovative new ways to extract and concentrate ammonia from 0.3% to 20%. Working alongside Warwick University, they were also able to crack the ammonia to produce hydrogen and, alongside Northumbrian Water’s laboratories, analyse for contaminates (e.g. solids, metals, and organics) to understand how they impact upon efficiency and ultimately the ability to achieve end of waste status.

With continued collaboration between Organics and Northumbrian Water, they have also been able to generate longer operating hours and useful analytical data from the pilot plant at Howden, refine the control plant algorithm and add tighter control to the ammonia concentration in the aqueous product, to ensure that it is most efficient. The teams involved were also investigating various options for mitigating carry-over of contaminants into the product.

This project has also provided Northumbrian Water with a better understanding of the nature of the centrate and its impact on the downstream processes.

Northumbrian Water and Organics are now ready to share their exciting successes with the wider industry, as well as what they have learned along the way. So, sign up for this event today to hear about how you can reduce the costs and energy consumption involved in wastewater treatment, protect local water courses, and recover valuable resources from wastewater sites in your organisation.
