The Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CaSTCo), led by United Utilities with programme management from The Rivers Trust and funded by the Ofwat Innovation Fund, is a £7.1 million programme transforming how we monitor the state of our rivers.
CaSTCo empowers communities who care about their river and brings together citizen scientists, river experts, regulators, and multi-sector partners to capture, retain, and share environmental monitoring data in a robust, independent, and consistent way.
The programme has brought together over 30 organisations to co-develop a shared framework, principles, and tools for collaborative monitoring. These approaches have paved the way for nationwide citizen science and catchment monitoring standards, enabling targeted interventions where they will have the greatest impact.
The Roadmap for the Future has been released, outlining actionable, prioritised recommendations for a unified, data-driven monitoring framework to achieve healthier rivers.
Join our Spring Showcase on Wednesday 5th November, 10:00 – 12:00, to hear from the project team and see how demonstration groups and adopters of the framework have implemented the CaSTCo approach. These case studies will showcase successful practices and provide insights to help your organisation identify opportunities to implement and benefit from the Roadmap for the Future.
The showcase will give you the opportunity to:
- Understand how CaSTCo frameworks can inform operational planning, support initiatives such as Outfall Safari, and target decision making and planning for AMP9
- Examine successful initiatives from across the country, identify which practices could benefit your own operations, and access the right contacts to follow up with
- Review how demonstration groups such as Mersey Rivers Trust, Ribble Rivers Trust and Norfolk Rivers Trust have applied the CaSTCo approach and delivered measurable outcomes
- Learn how collaborative monitoring is strengthening partnerships, deepening customer engagement, and enabling data analysis to support both operational delivery and environmental improvements
