AMP8 biodiversity performance commitments, set by Ofwat, have been designed to incentivise water companies to conserve and enhance biodiversity in the exercise of its functions. This performance commitment measures the net change in the number of biodiversity units on nominated land per 100km2 of land in the company’s area.
Severn Trent therefore partnered with AiDASH in July 2024, to quantify the biodiversity and natural capital value of the Severn Trent estate (20,000 hectares) and to support them in meeting Ofwat’s biodiversity performance commitments. This entails monitoring biodiversity on sites designated for biodiversity uplift, and ensuring no deterioration across company owned land.
With BNGAI™ by AiDASH, they completed this assessment in just 5 months, an undertaking that would have taken years using traditional ecological survey methods.
Meeting mandatory biodiversity targets on Capital Delivery projects and testing the impact of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) on biodiversity are other use cases currently in progress, which will be touched on during this free virtual event.
In a previous showcase with South West Water, we explored AiDASH’s Intelligent Sustainability Management System (ISMS) – a predecessor to BNGAITM – you can view this case study and showcase recording on the Spring platform, for a reminder and live demo of the solution!
In comparison, BNGAI™ is tailored to focus in on, and provide a comprehensive solution for, biodiversity. This upcoming showcase event will explore the steps involved in trialling and scaling BNGAI™ within Severn Trent, and the unique challenges and learning points experienced by the project team.
