Want to learn more about the lower-impact alternative approaches to phosphorus removal that are being explored at rural wastewater treatments works within United Utilities (UU)?
Join Spring and UU on Tuesday, 13th August 2024 to find out how this OFWAT funded project will provide the water industry with a holistic view of the cost, capability, operation, maintenance and carbon impact of various phosphorus removal approaches: namely electrocoagulation (EC), natural coagulants (NC) and reactive media (RM).
The UK water industry is heavily dependent on the use of metal-based coagulants for the removal of phosphorus, and a significant number of rural wastewater treatment works will receive phosphorus permits going into AMP8 and beyond – which provides some unique challenges.
By exploring the key benefits, such as cost, reliability and sustainability, of chemical-free options, ALT-P aims to reduce the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment and increase resilience by reducing reliance on chemicals.
In partnership with Southern Water, Wessex Water, University of Portsmouth, Power & Water, Kolina, Hydro Industries, and Evergreen, UU are aiming to answer the industry’s questions regarding the reliability, maintenance, OPEX and carbon reduction of novel phosphorous removal techniques – paving the way to more sustainable long-term treatment practices.
Lisa Mansell, chief engineer (innovation) at United Utilities, said:
“The project is really opening up new opportunities and we are now understanding, in more detail, what is required from us as water companies to incorporate these processes and move away from our fossil fuel-based standard solutions.”
Sign up to this Spring showcase to hear directly from the project team about the progress and learnings behind the trialling of these chemical-free options at rural wastewater treatment sites.
